How's Your Blood Pressure? from caledonia quilter

I'll start off with a little quilty-stuff, then move on to the topic du jour.

Pieced at Tobermory retreat but not yet quilted:

Started an embarrassingly long time ago, finally quilted, and heading to the hospice as a guild donation:

TOPIC DU JOUR

Dad died of a heart attack when he was 72.  He was a tough guy.  A contractor, specializing in drywall I think.  I was one of those teenagers who paid zero attention to the people who really had some import in my life, so I don't honestly know.  As a teenager I slept until noon ...

Meet NINA ...or What Was I Thinking? from caledonia quilter

Coco the rescue from Niagara Dog Rescue in the back.  Nina the rescue from Hamilton-Burlington SPCA in the front.  Two dogs who don't exactly like to wear Santa hats, lol.

Working on Recovery from caledonia quilter

Yes, I mean recovery from Covid.  (I have not entered a 12-step program to disengage from my sewing machine.)  It's October, which means a week in Tobermory with the Beach Girls, and that seemed to me like a perfect place to recover!

I figured a Limoncello Spritz would be a very healthy cocktail, right?  Served with short rib crostinis for our afternoon cocktail hour.  Sadly (or not??) the spritzes weren't a huge hit, so Deb and I had to drink two each.

We've done some practice with our Zentangle skills...

There's still one more wedge space ...

A pile of leftovers from Making A Lather

I had a stack of leftover riley blake fabrics that coordinated rather well. I decided to cut another trip around the world donation quilt. I wanted to cut a bigger size than my last one. This time, I cut 4 inch strips. I want to see the difference. I was cleaning up a spot, and had this leftover pile waiting for an idea. I am not sure when I will start on it. But, the pile is gone.

I hope my reds are different enough

Black and blue and quilted too from The Academic Quilter

Hello everyone! Well, the grading is over and I am experiencing this odd thing called "relaxation." So far I like it, but it's kind of weird. I still have a couple of meetings before this year is in the archives, but it's mostly done. I have a very full summer schedule, but I did plan for a couple of weeks of doing nothing, so I have a little time before I have to buckle down again.

I decided to start my vacation by tackling some of the many (too many) unquilted tops I have hanging. Some of them ...

Asparagus & The Cost of Groceries, and the Current Quilt from caledonia quilter

 FOOD

I'm currently at the beginning of a couple months where I will pick asparagus every day.

This week I've made:
GREEN CURRY CHICKEN WITH ASPARAGUS  DH and I don't find it hot, but if you're not used to cooking with a curry paste you may have a different experience.

ASPARAGUS & CHEDDAR QUICHE (this freezes quite nicely, and I use a homemade pie crust).

I have to admit to being SHOCKED when I saw this...

Holy Mackerel!  $7.99???  I had to employ my mental coping technique of adding an imaginary question mark.

Apparently this will ...

Monday Motivation: May Challenge from Patchwork Sampler Blog

april challenge wrap-up

How did you do on April’s Challenge to make something with half-square triangles? It was a struggle for me, but I managed to finish a quilt top. My original plan was to make some progress on Carpenter Star blocks. I am not sure what I will do with that quilt so I once again, put that project on hold. Instead, I made split nine-patch blocks.

The block is simple–three light squares, three dark squares, and three light/dark half-square triangles. This block has some variations. One is Block #8 in the free Saturday Sampler series ...

Friday Finish: Five Yard Quilt from Patchwork Sampler Blog

This quilt is one I have been trying to finish since March. I am counting it toward March’s nine-patch challenge since the alternate blocks have nine pieces. Haha!

Both the cutting and piecing are fast and easy. The framed blocks are a great way to showcase a pretty fabric or large print. The pattern for this quilt is called Five Yard Quilt. It is a free pattern you can download free from this website. This website also shows a pretty version of this quilt. It is a great stashbuster because you can make it from five one-yard cuts of ...

Friday Finish: Winnie the Pooh Baby Quilt from Patchwork Sampler Blog

There is a miscellaneous basket of UFOs sitting in my basement family room. There are just random projects in various states of completion and last month I decided they need to go. I didn’t even go through the basket, but by the end of the year, I hope to donate, sell, trash, or complete (and donate) everything in there.

This is the first project and I am happy to say it is finished! This is a variation of the Quick Strippie pattern from maryquilts.com.

I had one charm pack and one yard of the Pooh fabric. For the ...

Candy Diamond Quilt COMPLETE from Wedding Dress Blue

Made out of fabric donated a few years ago, I believe by Stephanie. THIS PICTURE sparked the idea that finally pushed the fabric pieces to quilt status.

There was enough matching fabric included for back and binding.

It will likely be donated to the Children’s Hospital.

I used 2-1/2″ squares so this one finishes at 38″ square.

Friday Finish: Nine-Patch Challenge from Patchwork Sampler Blog

March challenge: nine patch

Do you remember the Nine-Patch Challenge post from March 1 (click here if you missed it)? In a nutshell, I am trying to whittle down my flannel stash and wanted to add an element of fun. Nine-patch quilts are quick and easy and versatile enough to use whatever fabric you have on hand. Unfortunately, I will have to finish more than one baby quilt to make much of a dent in my flannel.

This is the ONE little quilt I finished.

This fox fabric is so cute, but now it is gone. I just barely had ...

Only a year late from The Academic Quilter

Hi all! Yes, thank you, I am feeling much better now. It took a lot of laying around on the sofa, but that's just the kind of assignment I am well suited for. When I was sick as a kid, I used to lay on the couch and watch soap operas with my grandmother. Have you seen daytime TV lately? It is definitely not those soap operas!

Anyway, once I dragged myself to the shower and started to feel human again, I finished up a quilt top that I started a year ago. We should be very pleased that ...

Are You Up For a Challenge? from Patchwork Sampler Blog

After 30-plus years of quilting, I have accumulated too much fabric! I sew nearly every day, but it still takes a long time empty a shelf or bin. When we had our water heater replaced last month, I rearranged some bins and realized I have many yards of flannel. It is bulky and takes up a lot of space and I don’t like working with flannel. To motivate myself and to encourage you to use up some fabric, here is the first stashbuster challenge.

In March, use some scraps or stash to make a nine-patch quilt. I will be ...

A Winter Quilt & A Donation from caledonia quilter

This is a beautiful quilt made from a panel.  As you know, Winter Is Coming.

I love this gal's work.  She cut up the panel, did some math, made lots of patchwork, then put it all together.

Even the back is lovely.

Back in the spring my friend and I were horrified about what was happening in Ukraine, and we decided to put our stashes together and make a quilt for donation.

Here's the final product.

A closeup of the quilting - sunflowers.

I also made some placemats to go with the quilt.

I'm pleased to say that ...

Fall & Winter Projects from caledonia quilter

I started this back in the summer, it became Part II of a wedding gift.  Cute - a modern version of Christmas trees.

The pattern is a freebee from Art Gallery Fabrics, "Tepee Adventures".  It's written as a lap quilt so I had to make more blocks and kind of re-jig things to get a queen size quilt.  Most of the fabrics came from my stash, with the exception of the backgrounds and the border, and I think a couple of fat quarters.

This was made as a gift for an animal lover.

All fabrics from my stash, although the ...

Positively handsome from The Academic Quilter

Hi all! Every year I forget just how exhausting it is to get ready for a new academic year. How is this possible? I've done this a lot of times, so I should know by now, but somehow, I always leave things for the last minute. This is what I've been doing all week instead of sewing or literally any other fun stuff. I know you'll all understand when I say that I really need more summer. Come back, summer! We need more rest in the sunshine!

Ah, well. I've been trying to finish up the ...

tiger, tiger finish from Making A Lather

At the very last minute, I have finished my one monthly goal for June. So glad to have a finish. I plan to donate this to a local shelter for hands to help.

My friend Linda brought a scrap bag to me.... I had found the tiger embroidery at a thrift store...I decided whatever I pulled out of the scrap bag, I would add to the quilt improv style. It has been fun. Some colors, I would not have put together on purpose. But, I like them together here. I think I saw a video on you tube by ...

Cheerful checkerboard from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone, and a happy Friday to you. It is currently raining here, but that's a good thing, because it's bringing in cooler temperatures. Plus it's good for all the flowers I planted this week, so. . .hurray for the rain? After all the wet we've had so far this year, it feels weird to say that!

I'm finishing up a paper and getting ready for a conference, plus my niece is coming to visit this weekend, so I haven't done a lot of sewing. A little bit of this, a little bit of that ...

Same but Different, Coco updates, More UFO's from caledonia quilter

I love seeing the same quilt made two different ways.  These are customer quilts, but this pattern is definitely on my "to-do" list.

Example #1 - dark geese with light background.

Example #2 - light geese with dark background.

COCO UPDATES

  • She's still terrified of DH.  I keep reminding both of us that we should expect to have 14 years with her, so calm down.  If it takes a year for her to get comfortable, then so be it.
  • We go out in the backyard in the afternoons now.  She kinda plays but not for very long.  She HAS barked at ...

Dinosaurs on parade from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! How was your week? We are on spring break this week, and I had plans to get a lot done. Spoiler alert-- I did not get a lot of things done. I did do some grading, and I cleaned a bunch of things, but that doesn't really feel like progress, you know?

Here's one thing I did get done-- I finished up and bound my little quilt for the Stay at Home Round Robin, run by Quilting Gail and other quilty friends. Amazingly, I kept up this year and even finished on time! Here are the ...
